Mindfulness can be fostered via practice. Mindful awareness “Mindfulness” is an intentional non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, and has been linked with multiple indicators of well-being. MindUP infuses evidence-based strategies from the field of positive psychology to help students thrive, and bolster their well-being. Positive psychology is the study of the strengths that contribute to individual and community thriving and well-being. In MindUP, students learn about the concept of neuroplasticity, and how their brain regulates emotions. The field of neuroscience seeks to understand the structure and function of the brain and nervous system. Studies show that development of these skills is associated with a wide range of positive outcomes, including increases in executive functioning, adaptive behaviour, prosocial skills, and academic performance. MindUP integrates themes and lessons based on neuroscience, mindful awareness, and positive psychology. MindUP targets five core social and emotional learning competencies, which are: social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making, self-awareness, and self-management. MindUP is a universal program that provides all students with the opportunity to develop social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Thanks to the Concordia Fund, the ES counselors will augment the counseling department with two new innovative and invigorating programs , “MindUP” and “The Incredible Years.” MindUP
